Match Reports 2006/2007

Sep 10 Crumlin v NHSOB

A decent performance by NHSOB saw them go down by 15 points, which was a harsh score line on the Old Boys in the end. A fairly even openeing quarter saw Crumlin go 12-0 up before NHSOB managed to pull 1 back before half time. A dominant and clinical performance by Crumlin during the 3rd quarter saw raise their points tally to 27 before NHSOB managed to get into double figures creating a bit more of a respectable score line to make the final score 27-12 to Crumlin.
Points Scorers; Dan Heard 5, Sam West 5, Mitchell Willaims 2

Sep 24 NHSOB v Barry

Quite a poor performance saw the Old Boys go down 34-0  to a Barry outfit who weren't as good as the score line suggests. Barry were the dominant outfit for the majority of the game and with a strong forward pack got the majority of the ball and although a few NHSOB backs were doing well doing well individually, the back line just didn't seem to flow. Too many front up tackles were being missed and although there was some good tracking back by the half backs to prevent the score line getting ridiculous and unfair; this was an overall poor performance despite having a large number of players out.

Oct 1 NHSOB V Cwmbran

An improved performance by the Old Boys saw thm go down to a good Cwmbran side. The 39-0 score line was an unfair esult on a very depleted NHSOB side who didn't stop ompeting and fronted up well. A much stronger performance by the forwards saw the back line get a lot more ball and manage to put some good series of play together and were, in the end, unlucky not to score. A gutsy performance which prevented Cwmbran getting it all their own way will now create the foundations for a NHSOB team which can now only get better.

Oct 8 St Albans v NHSOB

A very good performance by the Old Boys was ruined by very unsportsman like conduct from a dirty St Albans team. A good start to the game saw the Old Boys go 5-0 up through a Mitchell Williams try in the corner and it looked as if NHSOB might have been able to run waway with the game if they could keep this intensity up, until the powerful St Albans centre managed to get over for a converted tryto give St Albans the lead. As the game started to even out St Albans extended their lead to 12-5 with another try. The score stayed like this for a long time until Mitchell Williams managed to make an interception and run 60m down the pitch and get under the posts. He converted his own try and levelled the scores. St Albans were now starting to develop a very dirty style of play and managed to get another try to go 19-12 up. As the game developed in to the last 1/4 Dan Heard managed to work his way over for a well worked try. The ref moved th kick out suspicously wide but that didn't stop Mitchell Williams conveting the try to once again level the scores. St Albans dirty play had now finally managed to intimdate the Old Boys and they took full advantage to take their score into the 30s with quite a few last 10 minute tries to put a very unfair complection on the score line as the Old Boys had been playin most of the rugby within the game. A good performance where NHSOB were just outdone by dirty tactics.

Oct 15 NHSOB v Brecon

An extremely poor performance saw the Old Boys go down 51-0 to a Brecon team who used their agile full back and very good No.8 to good effect. A poor game which shall have to be soon forgotten.

Oct 22 NHSOB v Risca

Possibly the best performance of the season so far saw the Old Boys go down 19-17 to a last minute Risca try.  A good start to the game saw the Old Boys go 5-0 up through a well worked Matthew Harvey try.  After this Risca started to put quite a bit of pressure on andin the end it finally told and they managed to get a converted try to go in to a 7-5 lead.  After this try the game started to even out but it was NHSOB  getting the scoring chances through some great tacticcal kicking by Mitchell Williams and 1 of these kicks resulted in a try through good chasing by Owain Tanner.  The conclusion of the second half saw the Old Boys go in 10-7 up knowing that they had a really good chance of winning the game.  A closely fought 2nd half saw the Old Boys start to take control and build up a lot of pressure until finally Jordan Brown went over and a good conversion by Mitchell Williams saw the Old Boys go 17-7 up and it now really felt as if NHSOB could go on and win the game even when Risca replied with a try of their own to bring the scores to 17-12.  Risac were now doing all they could to try and snatch the win of NHSOB and in the last minute of the match managed to get a try besdide the posts which was, unfortuanatle for the Old Boys, converted. When the ball went dead from the kick off the ref blew the final whistle. A good performance by the Old Boys who really didn't deserve their cruel fate.  Although this was a loss their a lot of positives to be taken out of the game that can be worked on throughout the season.

Nov 5 NHSOB V Caldicot

A good performance by the Old Boys saw them go down to a good Caldicot outfit 41-7.  Caldicot seemed to dominate the openeing stages taking a 12-0.  NHSOB responded well to this and were unlucky not to score before half time with a lot of pressure on the Caldicot line.  NHSOB started off the 2nd half well and scored very nearly straight away after a kick forward was chased up by Matthew Harvey and made his way over the line and under the posts setting up a simple conversion for Mitchell Williams which he gladly converted.  Following this the Caldicot team stepped there game up a level and ran in quite a few tries with the pick of the bunch coming during the last play with an end to end try with the ball going through good hands, but the Old Boys never gave up and if it weren't for a piece of rugby brilliance at the end of the game the scoreline would have looked a lot  better and given a fairer reflection of the game as Caldicot breaking the 40 point mark exxagerated the score linebeyond what it should have been. A good performance by a team who are improving weak by weak.

Nov 19 St Josephs Casnewydd V NHSOB

A good performance by the boys saw them go down to a very pacy St Joes team. The score-line of 52-0 did not represent the game with the boys becoming very unlucky not to score on several occasions. The first half was predominantly St Joes', but the Old Boys stuck up well and only leeked a few tries, mostly through overlaps or St Joes just using their superior speed. NHSOB had little chance to run the ball, becoming desperate to relieve the pressure, but what chances were available were taken well by backs and forwards alike, but no real pressure was ever really mounted on St Joes who ran in 4 tries before the half time whistle to make the half time score 20-0.  The 2nd half began the way the first half did but with NHSOB now really struggling to deal with the pace of St Joes who started to run in tries for fun. NHSOB responded well though and had an excellent period of pressure where they contained St Joes into their own half for around 1/4 hour where they were unlucky not to score several times, let aloneend up with the undeserved 0 that they got.  The end of the game started to even out, but St Joes managed to run in some more points to get past 50, this was once again well responded to by the Old Boys who had another sequence of territorial dominance adn were knce again unlucky not to score, if the game had lasted 10 more minutes who knows, unfortuanately, the final whistle went and St Joes seemed very relieved that they had kept a clean sheetand knew they had been in a good game. A once again improved performance by the boys who were unlucky to lose by the amount that they did.

Dec 3 Caerleon V NHSOB

A good defensive performance saw NHSOB go down 39-0 to a very good Caerleon team.  The game started badly with NHSOB conceding a try due to an over lap nearly straight away, but despite a lot of Caerleon pressure, went in at 1/2 time only 15-0 down knowing they had the chance of causing a real upset.  The 1st half followed in the same and Caerleon once again had quite a bit of pressure. NHSOB finally responded and rove Caerleon back to even the game out territoraly until Caaerleon started to run in a few tries, but, NHSOB managed to keep the score under 40 with some very hard defence which really started to tighten up at the end. A good defensive performance and a very respectable score line showing that NHSOB are really improving, are now within site of that elusive 1st win and that it seems that they will soon become the force they once were if the performances keep improving like this.

Dec 10 Sully Sports V NHSOB

NHSOB won their first game of the season in their last game of 2006, a close encounter with the final score 12-10 to the Old Boys.  A good start to the game where NHSOB showed off their superior rugby skill with some good breaks and offloads by backs and forwards alike, until, finally one of these breaks reulted in a great individual try for Sam West to give the Old Boys a 5-0 lead. Mitchell Williams kicked the simple conversion to
make the score 7-0 to the Old Boys. Some great NHSOB on the line defence stopped the bigger Sully pack getting over the lineuntil NHSOB started to once again put some pressure on the opposition. More NHSOB pressure and good running by the whole team led to another great running try, this time for Mitchell Williams to make the score 12-0.  Despite what the scoreline may suggest NHSOB didn't have the 1st half all their own way with Sully using their big boys well and NHSOB knew they would still have to work hard if they wanted that elusive win. The 2nd half was more even than the 1st with Sully now really starting to use their superior size to dominate the game, and they managed to get, in all fairness, a well deserved try through a 3/4/5 V 1 on the outside to really open the game up. NHSOB were now really starting to struggle to soak up the pressure and in the end gave in to a No.8 pick up from the very large Sully 8 but a missed conversion ment that NHSOB were still in the lead. Following conceding the try NHSOB rallied very well and not only held out Sully, were themselves very unlucky not to score several tries. Great defence for the last few agonising minutes, (which seemed like hours,) ment that NHSOB managed to gain their first win of the year.  A good performance by the lads who thoroughly deserved their victory after all the effort that has been made all season. Lets hope this is the 1st of many.

Jan 14 Caerleon A/B V NHSOB

On the high of their first victory of the season, NHSOB went out looking for 2 in a row against what was supposed to be a Caerleon 2nd team.  With many of their first team back starting the game Caerleon started strongly and camped themselves in the Old Boys 22 for around 5 minutes, fortuanately NHSOB managed to hold out the Caerleon siege and pushed on into the opposition 22.  Following many series of pressure only relieved by Caerleon's 1st string kicker NHSOB finally managed to make their way over with their first score of the game with a run down the wing by Rubin where he managed to get down in the corner for the opening score.  Mitchell Williams was unlucky with the following coversion attempt to leave the score at 5-0.  NHSOB didn't stop there and the pressure continued right through the half when a few pick and hits by the forwards resulted in a well worked try for Lewis Mcdonnagh out near the touch line; Mitchell was once again unlucky with the conversion which ment that NHSOB went in at half time 10-0 up.  With Caerleon now in trouble their coach decided to bring on the A's who had beaten the Old Boys well earlier in the season; but NHSOB fronted up and didn't let Caerleon gain any advantage in the 1st half and for around 10 minutes managed to keep Caerleon locked down in the Caerleon half.  However, with a squad of only 17 and no spare backs the Old Boys started to tire and a period of Caerleon pressure followed. 2 quick tries of which only one was converted gave Caerleon a 12-10 lead which they never looked like relinquishing with fresh legs constantly being brought onto the pitch and NHSOB having no substitutes left.  NHSOB still managed to hold out Caerleon right until the last when, on what was the final play Caerleon made a mistake taking a tap penalty and it seemed as if NHSOB had come out with a very respectable 2 point loss, but, the ref decided to let Caerleon retake the penalty instead of giving an NHSOB scrum. Caerleon managed to score of this srange decision to leave the score at a still very respectable 19-10 to Caerleon.
